We help educate, prevent and support

Our Teen Pregnancy Prevention and Intervention Program aims to reduce teen pregnancy and rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in teens.

Since 2016, comprehensive sexual health and HIV prevention education is required in California at least once in middle school and at least once in high school. Beginning in grade 7, instruction must include information about the safety and effectiveness of all FDA‐approved methods of preventing pregnancy and transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, as well as abstinence.

Services

The Teen Pregnancy Prevention and Intervention Program provides community and school-based sessions throughout San Diego County for youth ages 13-18. Youth learn medically accurate information about contraceptives and STIs and practice assertive communication skills to help avoid or delay sex and avoid unprotected sex.

Curriculum

This evidence-based curriculum provided by the Department of Health and Human Services Office of Adolescent Health helps youth:

  • Understand consequences of risky sexual behavior, such as teen pregnancy, STIs and HIV/AIDS.
  • Develop their own reasons for healthy decision making, navigate peer pressure and identify characteristics of healthy relationships.
  • Empower themselves and others to move toward life goals with enhanced decision-making skills.

Activities such as role-playing empower youth to make responsible decisions regarding common social pressures, including sex, teen dating violence, drug/alcohol consumption, stealing and ditching class. Youth are encouraged to initiate conversations with responsible adults and health care providers about sexual health.

  • Healthy Relationships: Exploration of love, intimacy and characteristics of a healthy relationship
  • Relationship Abuse: Violence and abuse, sex trafficking, sexting and internet safety
  • Family Planning and Contraception: Basic functions of the reproductive anatomy, protection against an unplanned pregnancy and abstinence
  • Teen Pregnancy: Options they may have if a pregnancy occurs and identifying a trusted adult and/or community resources
  • The HIV/AIDS Epidemic: Myths and Stereotypes about HIV infection, how HIV/AIDS affect the body and the importance of STI testing
  • Preventing Sexually Transmitted Infections: Protection, transmission of STIs, how to access treatment and communication
