SDYS Partners with San Diego Unified to Support Students and Prevent Human Trafficking

San Diego Youth Services (SDYS) is partnering with San Diego Unified School District to strengthen efforts to prevent human trafficking and expand support for students who may be at risk.

This partnership creates a more coordinated approach to helping students access support services when they need them. By working closely together, SDYS and the district aim to make it easier for students and families to find help, report concerns, and connect with resources focused on safety and wellness.

“Our staff members are ready to work side by side with San Diego Unified School District’s human trafficking prevention program to meet students where they are at,” said SDYS CEO Jonathan Castillo. “Through our long-standing human trafficking awareness and recovery support services, our team brings decades of experience working with young people and families.”

As part of these efforts, San Diego Unified has introduced several updates, including clearer reporting options, training for staff across the district and community town halls for students and families.

According to the San Diego Trafficking Prevention Collection, 90% of high schools across San Diego County reported cases of sex trafficking. Another local study also found that the average age of entry into the commercial sex trade in San Diego is 16 years old.

Efforts like this partnership help schools and community organizations respond more effectively and ensure young people know they are not alone.

Together, SDYS and San Diego Unified are working to create safer environments where students feel supported, informed, and empowered to seek help.
