Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2026
Martin Luther King Jr. Day - January 19th
by Nicole Chung, SDYS Youth, Young Adult, and Staff Advocate
We are a few weeks into 2026, and what a year it has already been. As we approach the first holiday of the new year, many of us may be looking forward to a well-deserved day off. However, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. represents much more than rest.
Dr. King represents MOVEMENT.
I’m reminded of the story of Mahalia Jackson, the legendary singer and close friend of Dr. King. During The March on Washington, when Dr. King was delivering what would become one of the most important speeches in history, Mrs. Jackson called out to him from behind the podium and said, “Martin, tell them about the dream,” Because she knew him. Because she believed in his vision. And because she was part of his support system.
Had Mahalia not taken her rightful place as his friend in that moment, the world may never have heard about The Dream, and Dr. King’s legacy might look very different today. That moment invites us to ask ourselves: What are you holding onto that could be a pivotal moment in someone else’s legacy, or even your own?
That moment is a powerful reminder that MOVEMENTS are not carried by individuals alone. They are sustained by support, trusted relationships, and people who share the same mission. Dr. King did not stand alone; he was surrounded by people who held him up, reminded him of his purpose, and helped carry the weight of the work.
At San Diego Youth Services, our mission calls us to do the same. We serve our youth with passion. We show up directly and honestly, while remaining trauma informed. We hold space for healing; not only for the young people and families we serve, but for one another as well. This work asks us to be present, grounded, and compassionate, even when the work is heavy.
As we honor Dr. King, we are reminded that we are part of the same continuum of MOVEMENT our elders, ancestors, and leaders carried before us. The MOVEMENT lives on in how we support one another, how we care for our youth, and how we continue to show up with courage, integrity, and love.
May we do more than pause on this day. May we continue the MOVEMENT together.
