SDYS Observes Dolores Huerta & Cesar Chavez Day

SDYS Observes Dolores Huerta & Cesar Chavez Day April 1, 2024

On Monday, April 1, 2024, San Diego Youth Services is closed in observance of Dolores Huerta & Cesar Chavez Day. Dolores Huerta & César Chávez worked together as labor leaders & environmentalists for 30 years.

Together they formed the National Farm Workers Association, which later became the United Farm Workers of America, a labor union for farm workers in the United States that protects farm workers in such areas as overtime, heat safety, pesticides and other worker protections.

In 2014, President Barack Obama proclaimed Cesar Chavez day a US federal commemorative holiday.  Technically,  April 10 is Dolores Huerta Day in CA, but we celebrate and honor both leaders and their fight for the rights of American farm workers together on March 31 (this year April 1, 2024).

Cesar Chavez Day encourages citizens to participate in community service activities that pays homage to Chavez’s work as an American farm laborer, union organization and civil rights activist.
