Becoming a Resource Parent: Changing Lives, One Child at a Time

By Krysta Hughes, Program Manager | Resource Family Agency, San Diego Youth Services

At San Diego Youth Services, we know one simple truth: children need families. They need someone to count on, someone who shows up, someone they can trust.

That’s why we call our foster parents Resource Parents—because they are more than temporary caregivers. They are healing, hope and home. They are the people who help children grow, thrive and believe again.

Why Foster with San Diego Youth Services?

Because we do foster care differently.

The traditional foster care system is broken. Too many children are moved from home to home, retraumatized by instability when they need healing the most. But at San Diego Youth Services, we believe in a new model—one built on relationships, consistency and care.

We partner with our Resource Parents every step of the way—offering emotional, practical and ongoing support. You are never in this alone.

What Is a Resource Parent?

A Resource Parent is someone who opens their home—and their heart—to a child or teen in need. This includes:

  • Foster Parents
  • Foster-to-Adopt Parents
  • Kinship Caregivers (relatives caring for family members)

The term “Resource Parent” was adopted by California to break the stigma of “foster care” and reflect the vital role you play in a child’s life. You are a resource not just for safety—but for healing, growth, and unconditional support.

Who Can Be a Resource Parent?

Resource Families come in all shapes and sizes. Married, single, LGBTQIA+, working professionals, retirees, empty nesters, there’s not one type of Resource Parent.

The only requirement? A full heart and a commitment to walk beside a child through whatever they’re facing.

If you’re open, empathetic, and ready to be present for a child who needs you, then you can be a Resource Parent.

What You’ll Receive

At San Diego Youth Services, we set you up for success:

  • Specialized training
  • Trauma-informed tools and education
  • One-on-one support from dedicated staff
  • 24/7 crisis response access
  • Ongoing mentoring and community

We don’t just place children, we build relationships. And we’ll walk beside you through every challenge, every question, every moment.

Real Impact, Real Change

Our Resource Parents tell us:

“I thought I was helping a child. I didn’t realize how much it would transform me, too.”

This is more than volunteering—it’s a life-changing journey. You’ll see a child heal, learn to trust, and begin to dream again. You’ll become a part of that story.

Are You Ready?

Right now, there are children in San Diego waiting for someone like you.

If you’re ready to open your heart and home—and if you're looking for a purpose that truly matters—we invite you to become a Resource Parent.
