Warning Signs of Sex Trafficking

Studies indicate that there are up to 8,000 victims of sex trafficking every year in San Diego. The average age of entry into sex trafficking in San Diego is 16.

Warning signs for parents, teachers and others to watch for could include:

Running away from home

Truancy, chronic absenteeism

*

Rumors among students regarding sex activities

*

Sudden change in behavior, attitude or attire

*

Claims of a new and mysterious/secretive “boyfriend”

*

Use of drugs (i.e. marijuana and ecstasy)

*

Bruises or other physical trauma

*

New cell phone or multiple cell phones

*

Use of terminology related to “the life”

*

Having friends or relatives who are, or have been, in “the life”

*

Secrecy with social media and phone

*

Prior history of sexual assault or domestic violence
