January is a time to raise awareness about one of the most serious human rights issues impacting communities across the United States, including right here in San Diego. Human trafficking affects individuals of all ages and backgrounds, and awareness is one of the most powerful tools we have to prevent exploitation, support survivors and strengthen our community’s safety.

We are a few weeks into 2026, and what a year it has already been. As we approach the first holiday of the new year, many of us may be looking forward to a well-deserved day off. However, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. represents much more than rest.
